Kalimuendo Scores as Nottingham Forest Claim Sentimental Win Against Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted around the City Ground as Forest fans reveled in a further win against Malmö. Much has occurred since Trevor Francis’s winning header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but Forest still cherish those memories. Similarly, significant changes have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team looking refreshed and earning a comfortable victory courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of progressing in the European competition.

Building Steam with Another Straight Win

For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for nearly a month after ending sixth in their domestic league – represented a third consecutive triumph across every tournament and added to the positive energy generated from last weekend’s stunning victory at Liverpool. While this match was a re-run of Forest’s European Cup triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was devoid of any real tension or jitters.

It proved to be an occasion filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive meeting between the sides since the European Cup final 46 years ago.

The home side fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the legends of that era by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s team from then were also in attendance. Both teams shared a dinner together before the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates received a rousing reception when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a characteristically impressive display was shown in the Trent End.

Recalling History

“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed half of a giant tifo, in block capitals. While no one needed reminding of what happened next, the rest was revealed as the squads came out from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. Another brilliant tifo showed Brian Clough watching events beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Control from the Start

So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was strong, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward fired an effort off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 advantage by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defense captained by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford FC. The Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a defender and into the path of Yates, who finished with his right foot from just inside the penalty area to register his maiden strike since last March.

Second Goal Confirms Dominance

Yates was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the brink of half-time, as well, his free header saved by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward poised to tap in the rebound from point-blank range. James McAtee, the playmaker handed a seldom start and just his second outing since the autumn, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.

Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned aside off Malmö back Rösler, the son of former Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic also earlier had a powerful header instinctively saved by the keeper, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Opponent's Difficulties

This was Malmö’s first match since the domestic league concluded on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal the home team's intensity. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. Yates had a volley blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.

The home side then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic shot off target from distance. It was one of those evenings. Dyche, aware of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made seven changes from the team that stunned Liverpool at Anfield recently, when they additionally scored three times, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs during the second half.

Smooth Evening for the Team

It turned out to be a hiccup-free night for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw the defender with the game long since boxed off and subsequently introduced teenage full-back Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche discussed the Forest old guard providing “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, as well.
