Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard courts

A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his maiden championship for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

Medvedev, a ex- top-ranked player, has endured a difficult season, winning just one match at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the American major.

Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serving in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and finally parting ways with long-term coach his previous coach.

Now working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently advanced in the recent weeks - climaxing in a closely contested three-set victory over opponent Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's first title since the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface since March of 2023.

The win also indicates the Russian has achieved 21 victories at 21 various events.

"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my children at once, so to win a trophy is particularly special," stated world number 14 the champion.

"This title is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter Alisa was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament in the past months.

The player's counter-punching play style and regular emotional displays on court had prompted some to question if his skill to perform at the highest level was finished.

Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and perform assertively, supported by an enhanced service.

Medvedev recovered from a deficit in the first set against the challenging Moutet, winning 4 of the final five exchanges to go ahead.

The competitors traded break points in the middle set before the challenger, striving for his maiden professional victory, seized the initiative to force a third set.

Moutet defended four early break points in a tight final set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to close out the victory.

Appropriately, he secured the win with a rally at the net, with his opponent incapable to control a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
